How to measure and install wallpaper

install Wallpaper is a great way to cover up an outdated room. Wallpaper can be expensive, however, so you want to make sure that your wallpaper choice is the right one for your space. When choosing wallcovering, first measure the length and width of each wall in feet.

Then determine how many rolls of wallpaper you will need by multiplying this number by two for walls with windows or doors on them and four for bare walls without any openings.

Once you have determined how much wallpaper you will need, order it from a supplier or purchase it at a local retailer. Now comes the fun part – measuring!

How Does a Quantity Surveyor Help to Calculate Wallpaper?

Quantity surveying is defined as “the profession concerned with managing and controlling the cost of construction projects”. It focuses on the efficient management of both physical and monetary resources throughout a project, from inception to completion.

The key to this profession is to ensure that all areas and aspects relating to construction are estimated and controlled effectively under budget during the course of a project.

Where walls are concerned, a quantity surveyor calculates the amount of wallpaper needed to decorate those walls. Wallpaper is one way to add color and design to a room, but Quantity Surveyors have an important role in making sure that sufficient paper is ordered for the job; these professionals know how much material is needed to do the work properly without waste or unnecessary expense. Wallpaper may sometimes be used on ceilings as well.

A quantity surveyor measures wall length (by taking into consideration door frames, windows, and skirting boards), ceiling height, additional features like windowsills and chimneys; these factors determine how many rolls of wallpaper will be needed at minimum.

How to measure a wall for wallpaper

  1. Measure the height of your wall
  2. Measure the width of your wall
  3. Add an extra inch to both measurements (for overlap)
  4. Cut out a rectangle from cardboard that is 1 inch taller and 2 inches wider than your measurements
  5. Place it on the wall with the bottom edge touching one corner, then trace around it with a pencil
  6. Cut out this shape using scissors or an X-Acto knife

How to measure a room for wallpaper

  1. Measure the height and width of the room
  2. Add two inches to each measurement (one inch for seams, one inch for overlap)
  3. Cut a piece of paper or cardboard that is as wide as your measurements and as tall as your measurements plus two inches
  4. Draw a line down the length of the paper at one-inch intervals, then draw lines across it at four-inch intervals
  5. Place this template on top of the wallpaper sample to get an idea of how it will look in your space
  6. If you like what you see, measure again using these new dimensions to make sure they are accurate

How to measure a kitchen for wallpaper

  1. Measure the height and width of the wall to be covered
  2. Multiply the height by 2 and add it to half of the width (for a horizontal layout) or multiply the width by 2 and add it to half of the height (for a vertical layout). This is your paper size
  3. Add an inch on all sides so that you have some room for error when cutting out your wallpaper pattern
  4. Draw your wallpaper pattern on graph paper, then cut it out with scissors
  5. Lay one strip down, starting at one end of your kitchen wall, making sure all edges are flush with each other; use painter’s tape if necessary
  6. Repeat step 5 until you’ve reached the opposite side of your kitchen wall

How to measure a bathroom for wallpaper

  1. Measure the length and width of the room
  2. Multiply the two measurements together to get the square footage
  3. Divide that number by 27 to find out how many rolls you’ll need
  4. Subtract 3-5% for wastage or excess paper on each roll, so your total is now 22-25 rolls
  5. Calculate how much wallpaper paste you will need based on the size of your bathroom (you can use a calculator like this one)
  6. Use masking tape to mark off where you want your stripes to be, then cut it into strips with scissors or a utility knife

How to measure a hallway for wallpaper

  1. Measure the wall length
  2. Measure the height of your ceiling, then subtract 2 inches
  3. Multiply the width by 3 and divide it by 4
  4. Add 1 inch to each side for overlap
  5. If you have a door or window that will be on one of the walls, measure those dimensions as well so you can include them in your calculations when determining how much wallpaper to buy
  6. Decide on what kind of pattern you want – stripes are simple but more intricate patterns like damask might look better with the design scheme of the room where they’ll go

How to measure a staircase for wallpaper

  1. Measure the width of the staircase
  2. Measure the height of the staircase
  3. Calculate how much wallpaper you will need to cover all surfaces
  4. Purchase your supplies and tools – including a measuring tape, pencil, scissors, paper cutter or mat knife, straight edge (ruler), leveler/tape measure, painter’s tape for trimming edges
  5. Layout your paper on a flat surface with plenty of room to work around it
  6. Cut off any excess paper from the top and bottom so that they are even with each other

Conclusion:

Once you have measured and cut your wallpaper, it is time to install it. If this seems like a daunting task because of how delicate the paper can be when wet or dry, we recommend using a roller brush instead of a paintbrush to apply the paste evenly over the entire surface.

This will help prevent bubbles from forming in between each layer. Remember that when positioning your pattern on the wall, make sure there are no gaps smaller than one inch at any point along its length so that it matches up with other pieces seamlessly.

After all layers are complete and dried for 24-48 hours, remove any excess material by cutting off with scissors or an X-Acto Knife before applying adhesive remover around the edges of the room to loosen residue without damaging.
