What is cloud backup, and how does it work?

Cloud backup helps in improving the data protection measures without increasing the workload of the IT staff. Most of the cloud backup services charge on a monthly and a yearly basis. Most of the small and medium-sized organizations are using cloud backup services for data storage.

What is the cloud?

Cloud hosting refers to a hosting service offered by the host over the internet. It offers great deal of flexibility allowing the users to scale resources as per their requirement. Cloud services are basically of two types: public cloud and private cloud. Public cloud services are available for everyone over the internet such as Amazon Web Services.

Basic steps of cloud backup

The most common method of creating a data backup is to send a copy of your data to the public cloud. The organization can use their internal software to send the copy of their data to the cloud. The cloud service provider then stores the data in a particular destination. It is necessary to have software that is capable of communicating with the cloud service provider. In the case of a public cloud IT professionals might have to undertake additional measures to ensure data protection.

Backing up to a service provider

In this case the organization sends the data to the cloud service provider. The software used by the organization to send the data might be given by the service provider as part of the plan.

Choosing a cloud-to-cloud (C2C) backup

This is a recent development in the list of cloud backup services. In this scenario the copy of the data is sent from one cloud to the other. The software used to execute the procedure is often delivered by the host.

Using online cloud backup systems

Physical hardware can also be used to create a data backup on the cloud. These appliances come equipped with the backup software, disk capacity and the backup server. The appliances provide seamless links to multiple  services.

Using a technique called cloud seeding

In this case the cloud service provider sends a hard drive to the client to create a data backup. By doing so the client no longer has to send the data to the service provider.

Types of backup

In case of a full back up the complete data is copied whenever the backup process is initiated. Complete backup ensures maximum data protection. However, it can be a little time-consuming to perform complete backups on a regular basis. This method is less time-consuming and takes less storage space. It is one of the most commonly used data backup procedures.

Full backups copy the entire data set every time a backup is initiated. As a result, they provide the highest level of protection.

However, most organizations cannot perform full backups frequently because they can be time-consuming and take up too much data storage capacity.

This method saves time and storage space, but can make it more difficult to perform a complete restore. Incremental is a common form of  because it tends to use fewer resources.

Cloud backup services have proven to be an effective storage solution for organizations of all sizes. The host ensures the protection of client data by implementing multiple security protocols. Cloud backup services are a cost-effective storage solution. Organizations can choose the most suitable method to create their cloud data backup. Clients can either choose to create a partial backup of their data or create a backup for the complete data of their organization. It is reliable, secure and affordable. The  service providers implement the latest technological innovations to ensure the security of the client information. This is the reason why organizations are moving their data to the cloud platform.
